Dear members & friends of Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhist Center of Los Angeles (RKLA),

Before the end of 2025, we will join the Giving Tuesday movement through our campaign, “End the Year with Gratitude.” This is a worldwide day of generosity held after Thanksgiving. We extend our giving period through December 7. RKLA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are 100% tax-deductible.

For the RKLA community, this is not just a fundraising effort. It is the spiritual practice of giving. When our gratitude meets the Buddhist mission of RKLA—nurturing compassionate hearts to create a caring society—this selfless encounter generates blessings for our whole community and beyond.

Thanks to you, this year RKLA welcomed 37 new members and over 300 non-member visitors. Our achievements also include new initiatives that aim at reaching out to and serving the community such as weekly AA Recovery Ninjas meetings (first English-language AA meeting in Boyle Heights), mindfulness craft activities for kids and Buddhist Sound Bath Meditation. The recent annual yard sale and fall festival also welcomed a few hundred people from the neighborhood. Since we are financially independent, everything we offer is sustained by your caring support.

Last year we faced a major cost of replacing rooftop AC units for $60,000. Our century-old building requires upkeep, including the monthly expense of utilities (over $3,000), garden care/pest control ($481), Wi-Fi ($1,134), trash service ($443), and quarterly elevator maintenance ($2,113)--just to name a few.

Your contributions will continue to help us meet these essential expenses and sustain the life of our spiritual home. Looking ahead, we must repair roof tiles and make safety improvements to our alleyway entrance.

If financial giving is difficult, you can support by volunteering. As the Lotus Sutra teaches us, oneness of our caring heart can be expressed in many forms, and every expression of care is equal to the Buddha's boundless compassion.

Please share this message with your friends and family. Tell them the story of your own experience with RKLA. May the spirit of our giving create the conditions for an abundant and joyful 2026 for each one of us and all living beings.

With palms together in gratitude,

Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhist Center of Los Angeles

Minister, Rev. Dr. Kyohei Mikawa
